| Every individual has his own history, life circumstances, and ways of seeing. Each of those three areas can affect that person’s mood, thoughts, and sense of self. A thorough understanding of those three areas can make clear the changes necessary for wellness. A combination of understanding where one has been, is now, and how one sees the world going forward is the first step to making constructive changes. The next step is taking chances and testing out some of those changes. My role is to help make things more clear for a client in the first step, and to guide and support in the second. I see clients with a frequencies ranging from every few months to two or three times a week, as we decide is effective.
Psychotherapy
Psychiatry and psychotherapy have made huge strides over the last century. Advances in pharmacology, neuroscience, and a variety of techniques of talk therapy have given psychiatry a handle on issues from overwhelming anxiety, mood swings, delusions, and addictions to more subtle questions of meaning, satisfaction, and joy. The better we understand the human brain and relate to the human experience, the more we can help our clients understand what ails them and guide their treatment. Based on a thorough assessment and understanding of my clients, I offer a tailored course of therapy, with or without medication, to address symptoms and troubling issues, and to promote general well-being.
Psychopharmacology
Neurotransmitters are the currency of the mind. Over the last fifty years, we have learned that both medications and experiences, including the experience of psychotherapy, affect the course of neurotransmitters along pathways in the brain. As such, both medication and talk therapy can be used, alone or together, to shift the economy of the brain towards wellness. Every client is different, and things change; so, medication can always be an option or a consideration.
